How to Organize Your Wardrobe

If you hate it when you can't find anything in your wardrobe, follow these steps to make it clean and organized. Have fun! Don't obsess!

Steps

  • Make sure you have at least 2+ hours to devote to cleaning. It's a big job.
  • Empty out your closet and dresser drawers completely.
  • Recycle anything that is severely stained or otherwise ruined beyond repair.
  • Label the boxes with the marker: "Charity" and "Sew/Repair"
  • Ask yourself: Will I ever wear this? Does it even fit me?
  • Place items that either don't fit or you never wear into the "Charity" box.
  • Place items into "Sew/Repair" box only if your actually intend on getting to them some time. Otherwise, toss them into a garbage bag.
  • Seal the "Charity" box with duct tape. This is so you're not tempted to re-open it and change your mind.
  • Create outfits from what remains. Be sure to include any accessories you'll use. [This will be easy when you have less clothes and can see what you have to work with]
  • Make a note of any pieces that are missing (for example, a blouse to go with a blazer and slacks) in the notebook. Save this list for when you have time to go clothes shopping.
  • Hang up and put away whatever remains.

Tips

  • If you are a shoe fanatic, put them on a rack so they take up less space.
  • If you have some unwanted junk at the bottom of your wardrobe like cheap plastic clothes hangers, give some of them away. You can always get more when you buy new clothes.
  • If you want to be really organized and make things easier, you could sort your clothes by color- go from black to a very light colour like pale pink or white.
  • Organizing your wardrobe will take about 1 or 2 hours. Remember to take regular breaks, but stay focused on the task.
  • You can make it fun by putting in posters, or you could build something for the wardrobe like a small shelf for perfumes or your best makeup. But whatever you do, be proud of it!
