Why is having clear goals important?

Aina Egeberg

One of the most challenging aspects of dealing with weight issues is that we tend to define our goals negatively. That is, we think in terms of “losing” weight and “Keeping it off”. Goals stated in language such as “losing weight”, “Stopping eating so much”, “Getting rid of fats and sweets”, “keeping off the pounds” etc. are embedded negatives which paradoxically focuses your attention precisely on what you want to avoid. (The only way to not think of something is to think of something else…) It is like continuously reinforcing your mind with internal representations of what you don’t want.

By comparison, a question like “how can I get fit, healthy and enjoy the process?” focuses your attention on what you want.

The first question we need to ask ourselves is “What do I want?” We need to answer that clearly for our unconscious mind to help us on the way to getting there.

Just as if anything really was possible, what would you want? If there was no limitation in terms of age, money, time, freedom, other people or possibilities…
