Pau D’arco
Pau D'arco is a natural grown herb that is derived from the inner bark of the Tabebuia Avellanedae or Tabebuia Impetiginosa (Taheebo) tree grown in South America. Pau d'Arco Tea has been used for many centuries by the Indio tribes of South America. The ancient Incas and Aztecs were probably the first to be familiar with the herbs healing powers. Stories abound telling of its miraculous curing powers.
The tree can grow up to 30 meters high and is known for its extravagant bloom of pink and violet flowers. While the tree is beautiful it is really the heartwood and inner bark of a particular species of the tree the Tabebuia Avellanedae, that is most prized.
One local indigenous term for this wonderful remedy is 'Tajy' - which means 'to have strength and vigour'. It was one of the chief herbs of the ancient Inca culture, and has a history of use stretching back thousands of years. They used it to treat cancer, lupus, infectious diseases, wounds, backache, toothache and sexually transmitted diseases.
Long held in high regard by western practitioners for its benefit to Candida sufferers, recent research is beginning to uncover the potential of Pau d'Arco for fighting a whole host of other fungal and yeast problems, and for protection from the increasingly prevalent methicillin-resistent Staphyloccus (MRSA) infections plaguing our hospitals.
Research at Rio de Janeiro University in Brazil into the anti-microbial activity of 14 traditional Brazilian plants showed that two actives (called naphthoquinones) exhibited anti-bacterial activity against three separate strains of the 'hospital superbug'.
Past research has shown Pau d'Arco to be effective against the Flu virus, and both E-Coli and H-Pylori infections, among others.
Pau d’arco is available in health food stores as capsules, tablets, alcohol solutions, dried bark and tea. However, pau d’arco must be boiled for at least eight minutes to release the active ingredients, making a tea from the bark ineffective unless properly prepared.
