Selenium
What does it do?
Selenium’s main role is as an antioxidant helping to protect against free radicals and carcinogens. It reduces inflammation, stimulates immune system to fight infections, promotes a healthy heart and helps vitamin E’s action. It is required for male reproductive system, needed for metabolism.
Deficiency Signs
Some deficiency signs are; Family history of cancer, signs of premature aging, cataracts, high blood pressure, frequent infections.
Food Sources of Selenium
The amount of selenium in our food sources, whether consumed directly as plants or as meat from animals that have eaten the vegetation, varies according to soil levels. Most selenium is also lost during processing. Some foods sources are; Brewer’s yeast, wheat germ, liver, butter, tuna, oysters, most fish, whole grains, shellfish, molasses, mushrooms, herrings, cottage cheese, cabbage, beef liver, courgettes, cod, chicken.
