Vitamin C
What does it do?
Vitamin C is a very important essential nutrient which we must obtain from diet. It is found only in the fruit and vegetable foods and is highest in fresh, uncooked foods. It is one of the least stable vitamins, and cooking can destroy much of this water-soluble vitamin from foods. Vitamin C strengthens the immune system and fights infections. It makes collagen, keeping bones, skin and joints firm and strong. It is an antioxidant and helps detoxifying pollutants and protecting against cancer and heart disease. It also helps make anti-stress hormones, and turns food into energy.

Deficiency signs includes frequent colds, lack of energy, frequent infections, bleeding or tender gums, easy bruising, nose bleed, slow wound healing, red pimples on skin.

Best Supplement
Vitamin C is ascorbic acid. This is mildly acidic in the digestive tract and in large doses (5 g or more) does not suit everyone. The ascorbate form is mildly alkaline and more easily tolerated.

Bioflavonoids in fruit and vegetables increases its effect. It works with B vitamins to produce energy and with vitamin E as an antioxidant.
